Edwin S. James collection, 1874-1991.

Research materials used by James in preparing his illustrated lecture, "The Last Confederates Live in Brazil," based largely upon the experiences of James McFadden Gaston, a physician from Chester, S.C., whose 1867 book, Hunting a Home in Brazil, aimed to entice other Southerners to escape Reconstruction in the U.S. and seek a new home in South America. Featuring maps, posters, and photographs, the lecture examines the basis for Southern colonization of Brazil and the plight of families, including many South Carolinians, who settled at Gaston's colony, Xiririca near Iguape. and other locations, including settlements founded by William H. Norris at Santa Barbara D'Oeste, by Frank McMullen at New Texas, by The Rev. Ballard Dunn at Lizzieland, by Charles G. Gunter on the Rio Doce at Linhares, and by Warren L. Hastings on the Amazon River at Santarem. Research files written in both English and Portugese, consist of letters from descendants of Confederate immigrants; photographs; newspaper clippings and journal articles; names of Brazilians descended from Confederate immigrants; and genealogical information re immigrant families. Other materials include a typescript copy of Julia L. Keyes, "Our Life in Brazil," Apr. 1867 - Aug. 1870; "Confederates in Brazil," 7 Apr. 1969, a typescript by Frances Walker; and "Brazilian Recollections," an undated reminiscence by Lucy Judkins Durr.
